Dropped kerbs in Hertfordshire
Any frontage being turned into a driveway for the first time needs the kerb dropped at the front. Some driveway extensions need it too. It is the vehicle crossing from the road onto your property.
Planning permission for a dropped kerb
In England, a dropped kerb needs a planning application. There are real regulations around it. We handle the application and help you through the paperwork.
The kerb drop itself is carried out by street works certified companies we work with.
The driveway itself is normally planning exempt, as long as it is permeable or drains to a permeable area, such as resin bound or gravel. A sealed surface with nowhere for the water to go is what creates the planning problem.
Driveway first, then the kerb
The driveway is laid first. The road level is already fixed, and the finished driveway level gives the second fixed point. The entry slope is set between the two.
Drop the kerb first and you are sloping into a level that does not exist yet.
A good dropped kerb and apron give an easy access point from the road, across the pavement and onto the driveway. There is no lip and no sudden change in level for a car.
We lay block paving, tarmac, concrete, resin and gravel driveways, so the finished level is set before the kerb is dropped. See all our driveway services.
